In the News: Wyss Foundation Provides Support for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
Since its inception, the Wyss Foundation has been devoted to advancing the health and wellbeing of those in need. In 2019, Hansjörg Wyss made his first $5 million contribution to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to support Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome (TIS) research and patient care efforts. The Wyss Foundation will now provide an additional $5 million to CHOP to rename and establish the Wyss/Campbell Center for Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome – in honor of renowned CHOP surgeon Dr. Robert Campbell.
“CHOP is making vital contributions to pediatric health, enabling children to live longer, healthier lives. The Wyss Foundation is honored to support the team working to improve the quality of life for children living with TIS,” said Molly McUsic, president of the Wyss Foundation. “The Wyss/Campbell Center is a great way to honor the legacy of Dr. Robert Campbell and is home to life-saving treatments and some of the world’s most distinguished researchers and physicians.”
TIS is a condition that affects an individual's chest walls, hindering lung development and breathing. CHOP has made impressive strides in TIS research, including the development of machine learning-based algorithms to create 3D models of lungs, a monthly clinic that allows experts to see patients and conduct studies and tests, and upgrades to the vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib originally created by Dr. Robert Campbell.
Mr. Wyss has always had a passion for cutting-edge research and discovery in the world of medicine. From the Hansjörg Wyss Wellness Center at Thomas Jefferson University to the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering, the Wyss Foundation has been on the frontlines of medical innovation for years. Now with more than $10 million in total contributions, the Wyss/Campbell Center will be equipped with tools and resources to continue making life-changing transformations in medicine.
“The generosity of Hansjörg Wyss and the Wyss Foundation is powering critical scientific advancements, fueling groundbreaking clinical research, and directly improving children’s health care, specifically those from under-resourced families,” said Jack Flynn, MD, chief of the Division of Orthopaedics and Richard M. Armstrong Jr., endowed chair in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at CHOP. “This support is providing our clinicians with the vital platform for innovation to make tangible improvements in the lives of the patient families we serve. The progress we have made is possible because of this crucial backing and we are excited to reach new milestones in the years to come.”
