Grant in the Spotlight: Oceana, Inc.

The Wyss Foundation is pleased to announce a $2,800,000 grant to Oceana, Inc. Oceana restores and preserves the oceans for future generations while working to protect wild seafood, a critical food source for the global population.
This grant supports Oceana’s efforts in Canada, Peru, and Mexico to rebuild fisheries to help restore critically depleted fish populations and advance ocean conservation policies. Overfishing, illegal fishing, pollution, and habitat destruction are having a devasting effect on our oceans and communities, and strong marine protections are needed to revive ocean abundance and biodiversity around the world.
“Wild fisheries have been a cultural and economic mainstay for Canadian coastal communities – Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike. With less than one-third considered healthy, the need to rebuild depleted fish populations has never been more urgent. This is especially true in the face of global overfishing and accelerating climate change and biodiversity loss,” said Josh Laughren, executive director of Oceana Canada.
“Ocean protection and fisheries management benefit communities around the world who rely on our oceans for food, climate regulation, and economic security,” said Molly McUsic, president of the Wyss Foundation. “We are proud to support Oceana’s efforts to restore abundance and biodiversity in the world’s oceans.”
