Forbes: Hansjörg Wyss Among America’s Top 10 Givers of 2014

Forbes Magazine this week announced that philanthropist Hansjörg Wyss is #8 on its list of individuals in the United States who gave the most to charity in 2014.  The Forbes analysis, conducted in partnership with the Philanthropic Research Institute, found that the top 10 most generous philanthropists in the U.S. in 2014 gave a total of $7.1 billion to charitable causes.

Forbes notes that Wyss gave $228 million to charitable causes in 2014, including contributions “to restore 257 square miles of forest in Montana and Washington State,” and to help “rebuild fisheries and fight wildlife trafficking and poaching” abroad.

Warren Buffet topped the Forbes’ list of “America’s Top 50 Givers” with $2.8 billion in charitable contributions in 2014, followed by Bill and Melinda Gates with $1.3 billion in giving.

Wyss joined Buffet and Gates in signing “The Giving Pledge” in 2013, by which he committed to giving away at least half of his wealth to charitable causes.  Forbes reports that 8 of the 10 top givers in the U.S. in 2014 are signatories of The Giving Pledge.
