2020 Wyss Scholars at the University of Michigan and Montana

(Washington, DC) February 11, 2020 - The Wyss Foundation is proud to announce the 2020 Wyss Scholars from the University of Michigan and University of Montana.  The Wyss Scholars Program supports the graduate-level education of a new generation of leaders in western land conservation. Wyss Scholars learn the latest in conservation law and policy and apply that knowledge in careers at land management agencies and nonprofit conservation groups.

Wyss Scholarships are awarded to students currently enrolled at one of the six host schools: Lewis and Clark (Law), Northern Arizona University (Environmental Science and Policy), University of Colorado (Law), University of Michigan ( Law and School for the Environment and Sustainability), University of Montana (Law, Environmental Studies Program and College of Forestry and Conservation), Yale University (Law and School of Forestry and Environmental Studies).

Wyss Scholars Selected at the University of Michigan

The University of Michigan has selected three new Wyss Scholars. Joey Dierdorf is a Fulbright Scholar with bachelor’s degrees in Studio Art and Political Science and a minor in German from Wabash College. Joey is studying for a Master of Environmental Public Policy and has already secured a summer internship serving as Director of a conservation corps in Northern New Mexico. Anna Greenberg has a bachelor’s from the University of Pittsburgh in Environmental Studies and is working towards a Master of Science in Conservation Ecology. Anna aims to use her education to apply scientific, practical, and well-rounded solutions to maintain the health and long-term viability of western spaces. Marlee Goska has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the State University of New York at New Paltz and is currently a Juris Doctor Candidate. After graduation, Marlee hopes to pursue a career as a conservation advocate in Idaho or Montana, doing nonprofit environmental work on wilderness and natural resource issues.

Scholars Selected at the University of Montana

Three new Wyss Scholars have been selected at the University of Montana. Nicholas Maya holds a bachelor’s degree in Ethnomusicology from New York University and is currently working toward his Master of Environmental Studies. After graduating, Nicholas hopes to work for a federal land management agency, such as the Center for Large Landscape Conservation and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative. Travis Anklam has a bachelor’s in Environmental Studies with a Biology minor and is also working toward a Master of Environmental Studies with a Natural Resources Conflict Resolution Certificate. Travis worked for the North Cascades Institute (NCI) in North Cascades National Park before attending the University of Montana, and he hopes to pursue a career working with non-profits and the public sector toward collaborative landscape-scale conservation in the Intermountain West. Alizabeth Bronsdon received her Bachelor of Science from Drexel University and is working to graduate with her Juris Doctor and a Natural Resource and Environmental Law certificate. Upon moving to Montana twelve years ago, Alizabeth realized her desire to further her education and develop the context and tools to protect Montana’s wild places.
